TuWay Opens Lines of Communication Between Two Facilities
IQE
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania (local office)
Business Problem
IQE is a leading supplier of semiconductor wafer products for wireless and optoelectronic components as well as photovoltaics and silicon-based epitaxy. Their main manufacturing location in New Jersey was adding a new offsite office that required a data connection to the main facility.
The office needed full access to the manufacturing plant’s intranet at a minimum bandwidth speed of 50Mbps. Because the office was located several miles away from the manufacturing facility, installation of fiber-optic cable would be costly. ISDN lines were unavailable. Uneven terrain, trees, and a housing complex between the two facilities prevented the use of any equipment that required an unobstructed line-of-site to complete the connection.
Project Solution
After careful evaluation of the requirements for the project and a review of each facility, TuWay’s engineers determined that the best solution would be a Motorola PTP600 wireless data link product. The Motorola product could connect the two facilities even with an obstructed view and could meet the bandwidth requirements outlined by IQE with less than 1ms of latency.
An additional 3-foot wide parabolic antennae used in conjunction with the Motorola PTP600 product created a cost-effective solution that provided a minimum average bandwidth speed of 57Mbps.
Results
IQE’s personnel are now connected to the manufacturing plant’s intranet network without any speed delays or latency issues. IQE has also installed a VoIP phone system that utilizes the Motorola PTP600 wireless link to connect to the PBX phone system at IQE’s manufacturing plant.
